Apprenticeships

Our wide variety of plants and facilities will give you exposure to unique challenges that will make you more capable, knowledgeable and versatile than other apprentices.

As an apprentice you’ll be exposed to challenges and opportunities unique to the water industry, and get to work on a wide variety of water infrastructure and assets.

You’ll leave with highly-regarded technical capability in:

  • Electrical
  • Mechanical engineering (fitter & turner)
  • Fabrication engineering (welder/boilermaker)

Apprenticeships may be located throughout South Australia and are regularly advertised

Your apprenticeship program

Your apprenticeship program includes:

  • Paid employment for the duration of your apprenticeship
  • A four-year contract of training approved by the Training and Skills Commission of South Australia.
  • A training program delivered by a registered training organisation (such as TAFE)
  • Relevant costs associated with off-job training paid by us

The type of work you'll do depends on the type of apprenticeship you have.

Electrical apprenticeships

As an electrical apprentice, you will:

  • Build switchboards and other control systems for pumps, valves and tanks
  • Trench and lay power cables
  • Find faults and repair various parts of our network and infrastructure
  • Work with ultrasonic and telemetry equipment
  • Maintain the supply of power to  our network and infrastructure

At TAFE you will undertake a Certificate III in ElectroTechnology, learning to:

  • Dismantle, assemble and fabricate electrical components
  • Lay and connect cabling
  • Assemble and set up wired and wireless systems
  • Assemble electronic apparatus

Mechanical apprenticeships

As a mechanical engineering apprentice, you will:

  • Use a range of tools and equipment, such as centre lathes, welders, guillotines, grinders and machine centres
  • Produce, fit and assemble parts
  • Produce sub-assemblies and components
  • Set up and adjust metal-working equipment and raw materials

At TAFE you will undertake a Certificate III in Engineering Trades (Mechanical), learning to:

  • Perform general machining
  • Use power tools and hand-held operations
  • Perform routine gas metal arc welding
  • Interpret technical drawings

Fabrication engineering apprenticeships

As a fabrication engineering apprentice, you will:

  • Perform welding tasks, including oxy-acetylene and arc welding
  • Manufacture and install various SA Water assets, like pipes, solar panels, ladders and security frames
  • Maintain major assets, such as water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Repair pipework

At TAFE you will undertake a Certificate III in Engineering Trades (fabrication), learning to:

  • Carry out manual arc welding procedures
  • Perform manual heating and cutting
  • Carry out mechanical cutting
  • Interpret technical drawings

How to apply

There are no minimum age restrictions to apply for an apprenticeship with us, but you will need a current driver's licence. Simply apply to our apprenticeship vacancy when it appears on our website.

    We’re improving your services and undertaking maintenance work in Direk. Sometimes our crews need to temporarily interrupt the water supply to our customers and/or manage traffic while they are working. Temporary traffic management may remain in place until reinstatement of the impacted road is complete. We always aim to minimise inconvenience by restoring services as safely and quickly as we can.
