Water Treatment

Water Treatment

Treating the water before it gets to you is important to make sure it looks, smells and tastes right and meets health standards.  Many water treatment plants have been built in South Australia over the years to improve the quality of available water sources.  The treatment program started with the construction of an iron removal plant at Kingston SE in 1963.

Today there are 52 operational water treatment plants, comprising;

  • Six large conventional water treatment plants serving metropolitan Adelaide.
  • Twenty-seven water treatment plants serving country regions and towns. Earlier plants were of conventional design while more recent plants incorporate newer technologies such as ion exchange, membrane filtration and activated carbon adsorption.
  • Ten iron removal plants in the South East
  • Two seawater desalination plants serving Adelaide and Penneshaw and seven bore water desalination plant serving Hawker, Leigh Creek and the remote Aboriginal communities of Indulkana, Kaltjiti (Fregon), Mimili, Yalata and Yunyarinyi (Kenmore Park).

A listing of the locations and types of water treatment plants can be found here .  The treatment process makes sure your water meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (2011). The national guidelines tell us what good, safe drinking water is and how to make sure what we give to you is exactly that.
