Disability access in full swing at new Lucindale pool

Locals and visitors with mobility issues in the South East will be able to enjoy the Lucindale Community Swimming Pool from today, with a new access swing now available at the revamped swimming centre thanks to SA Water's 2019 Community Partnerships Program.

Representatives from SA Water's Mount Gambier depot will today join the Lucindale Community Economic Development Board (LINC), major donors and the local community at the Lucindale Area School to celebrate the official opening of the new 25 metre, 3-lane heated pool facility.

LINC is one of 11 successful groups or events that received funding as part of SA Water's Community Partnership Program for 2019.

SA Water General Manager of Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson said the access swing is a fantastic addition to the LINK refurbishment project with a clear demonstration of how water can foster a better life.

"Water is part of overall wellbeing, including for people living with a disability or reduced mobility who rely on swimming as a source of recreation, rehabilitation or socialising with friends," Anna said.

"The new access chair pivots on the pool's edge to allow people with limited mobility to enter and leave the water with ease, and makes the pool facility inclusive for everyone looking to take a dip.

"Having a local swimming facility that can cater for everyone will make a real difference to many locals who have previously had to travel to neighbouring areas for swimming lessons, and we're proud to see the swing now in action for the wider South East community to enjoy."

Principal of Lucindale Areas School Rob Sandercock said the upgraded facility is a boost for the town after being without a community swimming facility since 2015.

“Our new pool has been a long time in the making and the community's support for the project has been amazing. It’s very exciting to hold the official opening and have it available for use this summer, after nearly five years without a pool in our town," Rob said.

“The disability swing will allow less mobile members of our community to use the pool, and we appreciate SA Water’s support to help make it more accessible to everybody."
