Funds flow for community reservoir activities

Community groups can now apply for up to $10,000 in funding to host events or projects at South Australia’s reservoir reserves which are open for recreational access.

Already enabling four grassroots initiatives as part of the inaugural funding round in 2020-21, the Reservoirs Partnership Program offers financial support to not-for-profit organisations looking to connect communities with nature and recreation at the reservoir reserves.

SA Water General Manager of Strategy, Engagement and Innovation Anna Jackson said the program fosters opportunities for community partnerships to further activate these open spaces.

“South Australia’s reservoir reserves are places of spectacular beauty combining adventure and fun, and by partnering with local community groups, we’ll deliver a range of fresh initiatives that enhance visitor experience and provide everyone with a chance to enjoy them,” Anna said.

“We’re looking for groups with a concept for an event or project that champions conservation of the environment, outdoor recreation, or helps educate communities on the importance of our natural environment and water sources.

“The program’s first round was hugely popular and is helping get some amazing initiatives off the ground and I can’t wait to see more great ideas flow in from the community.”

A new community kayaking venture, an adventure race, a ‘come and try’ experience for people of all abilities to enjoy the reservoir reserves, and an outdoor adventure program for disadvantaged youth, were supported by the 2020-21 program.

Southern Barossa Alliance’s Lyn Venning said funding received to enable their first Reservoir Outdoor Adventure Race at Warren Reservoir Reserve would create a new kayaking, mountain biking and running event.

“It will help us establish our inaugural event with safety and timing equipment, and promote it to people who may see the beautiful location for the first time,” Ms Venning said.

A volunteering program at reservoir reserves is also underway, with interested community members urged to get involved to help enhance the conservation and recreational offerings.

“This is another wonderful initiative coming to our reservoir reserves, and our volunteers will play an invaluable part in preserving the natural beauty of these sites,” Anna said.

More information about applying for the Reservoirs Partnership Program – which closes midnight Tuesday 28 September 2021 – and registering for the volunteering program can be found at reservoirs.sa.gov.au.
