SA Water customers urged to be alert to scam

SA Water is urging its customers to be aware of scammers trying to fraudulently collect water bill payments door to door.

Scammers have sought immediate eftpos payment for a ‘water bill’ with a threat to ‘turn off’ water supply if no payment is forthcoming.

Instances of the attempted scam have been reported in Tea Tree Gully and West Croydon, fortunately without any money being lost.

SA Water Senior Manager Media Relations Joshua Zugajev said requests from unidentified door knockers should be ignored and reported to police.

“Please do not hand over any money to a stranger on your doorstep falsely claiming you need to pay your water bill,” said Joshua.

“When someone from SA Water or our contract partners visits your property we are in uniform and able to produce identification.

“Importantly, we never knock on your door to collect bill payments and we never disconnect your water supply.

“If they tamper with your water meter, simply give us a call on 1300 SA WATER and we’ll send one of our uniformed and identification-carrying team members out to check and fix it.”

A police spokesperson said anyone approached by these scammers should remain vigilant and pay attention to details like the person's appearance and transport.

“Do not engage with them, do not let them in your home and do not provide them with any of your personal details,” the police spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information about this type of scam should call the Police Assistance Line on 131444 straight away.”
