Three decades in water for Morgan local Matt

Fifteen years ago, SA Water’s Matt Seton decided to take the plunge and kickstart his studies to forge a new career path.

Joining SA Water’s Morgan team in 1990 and spending the best part of 15 years laying and repairing pipes, Matt made the decision to hit the books to become a mature age apprentice as a maintenance fitter.

“It felt a bit daunting going back to school at 42 years old and being older than all the other apprentices, including the lecturer, but it proved that age shouldn’t be a barrier to trying new things,” Matt said.

“I took a leap and tried something different, and it has turned out to be the highlight of my professional career to date.”

Completing his apprenticeship and going on to become SA Water’s mechanical tradesperson based at the Morgan workshop, Matt is this year celebrating 30 years of service with the water utility.

As mechanical tradesperson, Matt helps maintain and upgrade the water operations at the Morgan Water Treatment Plant responsible for producing clean, safe drinking water for around 130,000 customers.

“The technology we use has certainly changed over three decades, from having no computers to being basically driven by technology, but I have embraced the challenge and how it can improve the way we work,” Matt said.

“The variety of work we get to do to improve our water networks for our customers is one of the main reasons I have loved coming to work every day for three decades, and I consider myself fortunate to work with a terrific team of people supporting me from our Berri workshop and more broadly across SA Water.”

SA Water’s Water Treatment Coordinator and Matt’s Manager, Paul Roberts, said Matt’s career milestone is testament to his hard work and perseverance.

“Matt is a highly-valued team member who constantly goes out of his way to help others, and this is great recognition of the positive impact he has on our local operations and the Morgan community,” Paul said.

“He also has an amazing knowledge of the local water network and Morgan Water Treatment Plant, which provides clean, safe drinking water to customers stretching from the Riverland to the Upper Spencer Gulf.

“30 years with SA Water is a tremendous feat, and we’re extremely proud to have Matt as one of our dedicated people working across the state to provide trusted water services for our customers.”
