Water & pets

Pets must have a constant supply of clean drinking water. Below are some tips for managing the water you give to your pets.

  • Dogs and cats: Make sure your dogs and cats have access to a large bowl of clean water, one with a heavy base so it can't be knocked over. In summer, try to keep the bowl in the shade to keep the water cool. Keep their water bowl clean. It can grow mould and turn into a mosquito breeding ground if the water is not changed often.
  • Birds: Birds love to splash in water. Bowls in aviaries can become soiled rapidly. Try to replace the water in aviaries daily, and keep in a partially sealed feeder.
  • Guinea pigs and rabbits: Consider giving guinea pigs and rabbits a drip-feed water bottle. That way the water will stay clean.
  • Fish and living aquatic creatures: Chloramination is used to disinfect filtered and cleaned drinking water. It can be toxic to fish even at low levels so needs to be removed or neutralised before using the water in fish tanks, aquariums or ponds. Click here for more information on how to do this or visit this page to see if your suburb receives chloraminated water.
