Fish and chloraminated water

Fish and chloraminated water

Important information for fish tanks, aquarium or pond owners

We disinfect drinking water to protect public health so it is safe for people to drink. However, fish and other living aquatic creatures are sensitive to chloramine, one of our disinfectants applied to cleaned and filtered water.

If you have a fish tank or pond and your water supply is disinfected with chloramine, protect your fish or other living aquatic creatures by removing or neutralising the chloraminated tap water before using it in your pond or tank.

How to neutralise your chloraminated water

It is easy to neutralise chloraminated water by using a water conditioner or carbon filter. The best solution for neutralising chloramine in your water will depend on your situation. If you’d like specific advice on the most appropriate product for your situation please contact your local pet shop or aquarium retailer.

Chloramine is made by combining ammonia and chlorine. While very small amounts of ammonia can sometimes be present naturally in fish tanks and ponds, even at low levels the ammonia in chloraminated water can be harmful to fish and other aquatic creatures.

If you’re unsure if your drinking water supply is chloraminated, simply use our what’s in your water service or get in touch with us on 1300 SA Water (1300 729 283).
